Carpenter’s durational performance Ritual Cut, focuses on the medium of hair and the act of hair cutting. The artist asks participants to sit in her sculpture Hair Chair and volunteer a lock of their hair to be cut. Once the lock of hair is shorn, the participant labels the hair with their name. Using her sewing machine, the artist encloses the lock of hair in a small transparent pouch, and displays this along with the label on a sheet behind her. The cycle repeats.
